Winners in Profile – What inspires the 2017 GuildCare Pharmacies of the Year
It’s been several weeks since the 2017 APP conference ended and much of the hype has died down. As everyone takes charge of their APP experience and moves to implement their learnings we look back at what inspires the 2017 GuildCare Pharmacy of the Year winners – Lanyon Pharmacy and Capital Chemist Wanniassa, and runner-up – Priceline Woden.
Lanyon Pharmacy: Inspired by respiratory health management
After undergoing a refit in late 2016 Lanyon Pharmacy now includes one dedicated consultation room, in addition to a consultation area. Having dedicated consultation spaces means that pharmacist staff are able to conduct a full range of Professional Services. While Lanyon Pharmacy offer a number of services that cater for a wide range of health conditions, it is respiratory health that is key to the pharmacy’s unique offering. Pharmacist and owner Mark Leighton is passionate about respiratory health, so there is a lot of focus on the health issue being one of the major health initiatives and promotional focuses of Lanyon Pharmacy.
Capital Chemist Wanniassa: Inspired by mental health management
Capital Chemist Wanniassa are dedicated to being Canberra’s premier extended hours pharmacy. Open 18hrs a day, 7 days a week the pharmacy is a real “health hub”. As part of being a “health hub” Capital Chemist Wanniassa offer and extensive range of Professional Services. However, it was the loss of a beloved staff member to suicide that has driven the staff to take in-pharmacy Professional Services one step further. Capital Chemist Woden have brought in-pharmacy mental health support services to the forefront by becoming the first Gold Standard Skilled Workplace for Mental Health First Aid in Australia and developing the ‘Pharm-a-friend’ mental health support program, to improve the health and medication outcomes of their local patient community.
Priceline Pharmacy Woden: Inspired by chronic-illness health management
Located in a busy suburban shopping centre, Priceline Woden pride themselves on looking after the long-term health needs of their local community. Professional Services are part of everyday functions at Priceline Woden, but it is the pharmacy’s focus on chronic illness care – especially diabetes, that make Priceline Woden unique in their area of the nation’s capital. Staff pharmacist Tara Whelan is a qualified diabetes educator, who patients are often referred to by local GP’s and hospitals. Aside from specialist care, a key initiative to drive focus on patient care and Professional Services in-pharmacy is that dispense is managed by a full-time dispense technician, which enables pharmacists on duty to focus on Professional Services and patient consultations.
The 2017 GuildCare Pharmacy of the Year winners and runner-up are extensive users of the GuildCare platform – using it to deliver Australia’s largest range of in-pharmacy Professional Services. After the launch of the next generation in Professional Services technology – GuildCare NG at APP, the future of Professional Services in Community Pharmacy is looking more inspirational than ever.
