One week to go until Cronulla Memory Walk & Jog!

Have you signed up for the Cronulla Memory Walk & Jog? We are in this together, so if you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to register.

Sign up online at www.memorywalk.com.au or at the event on the day.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM is encouraging as many local Cronulla residents as possible to support the event, which will take place on Sunday 26 March at Don Lucas Reserve, Cronulla

“As we prepare to host the Memory Walk & Jog in Cronulla for another successful year, we hope everyone will consider joining us,” Ms McCabe said.

The Cronulla event is one of 20 scheduled around the country in 2023. Participants can register as an individual or an entire team, to remember a loved one with dementia, or in support of a loved one who lives with the condition. Each event offers a wonderful opportunity for people impacted by dementia and their supporters to come together, walk or run, at any fitness level, and raise money and share stories.

Cronulla local Leslie is taking part in Memory Walk & Jog to remember his mum, Gloria who lived with dementia. She sadly passed away last year, aged 98.

“Mum raised seven children by herself after I was born and dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren.  When we had it confirmed that mum had dementia, I tried to read up and Google as much information as I could to understand about dementia and learn as much as I could to know how I could help my mum. I got frustrated that there was no cure and nothing I could do. Memory Walk and Jog is so special to me because it is my chance to do something in mum’s memory, as well as help other people like mum and maybe raise some funds for research. But it also reminds me of mum’s carers, many of whom came to her funeral as she was well-liked and we appreciated the care she was given.”

Why walk for dementia?

There are more than 400,000 people of all ages living with some form of dementia in Australia. Without a breakthrough, the number of people living with dementia is expected to almost double in 30 years. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of death for women.
