We are in this together!

The 2023 Brisbane Memory Walk & Jog is just four weeks’ away with the event taking place on Sunday 28 May at Rocks Riverside Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM is delighted to welcome participants to the flagship fundraising event.

“Memory Walk & Jog is Dementia Australia’s largest fundraising initiative and raises much needed funds to provide invaluable support, education and resources for people living with dementia, their families and carers,” Ms. McCabe said.

“It’s estimated that 65 percent of people living with dementia live in the community. This could be a family member, a friend or a neighbour. It could be anyone in our community. By walking, jogging, or running, raising money and awareness, you will help the countless families impacted by dementia in Brisbane.

“Brisbane local, Jim lives with younger onset Alzheimer’s and is taking part in Brisbane’s Memory Walk & Jog.

“A disease such as this is not only terminal but extremely cruel. It will eventually rob you of the things you value the most… your life’s treasured memories, your experiences and eventually the ability to recognise the faces of the people you love. To be honest the diagnosis was hard to take in and very difficult to get my head around. You definitely need the support of your family and close friends to digest it.

Memory Walk & Jog represents people living with younger onset Alzheimer’s by raising awareness of dementia, providing information and resources, advocating for high quality services, and promoting research about prevention, treatment, cure and care. Support like this can make a big difference nationally and locally, to people with dementia and their families, it really does help us so much.

Why walk for dementia?

There are more than 400,000 people of all ages living with some form of dementia in Australia. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people living with dementia is expected to almost double in 30 years. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of death for women.
