CCTV captures car smashing into pharmacy
A pharmacist has had a lucky escape after a car hurtled into a pharmacy last Wednesday morning.
CCTV footage of the crash shows a red Toyota Corolla mounting a kerb before crashing through the shop’s glass window doors and into the pharmacy counter.
Head pharmacist Christian Hernandez, who was preparing medication at the time, tried to jump out of the way, but was hit and pinned down by the vehicle.
Paramedics quickly arrived at Port Stephens pharmacy and helped free the 35-year-old.
He was later airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Fellow pharmacist and partner, Ralph Kaiko, told 9NEWS “he has no broken bones, a soft tissue injury…he’s going to be a very sore boy for quite a few days”.
“He certainly got out of this quite reasonably well considering, one, how far the vehicle had actually gone into the pharmacy, and two, where he was actually trapped by the car,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Luke Wiseman said.
It’s believed the 71-year-old woman behind the wheel was trying to park outside the pharmacy when she accidently hit the accelerator instead of the brakes.
Staff inside the pharmacy at the time were quick to act and help the elderly woman.
She was not injured and recorded a negative breath test at the scene.
The pharmacy was closed for the day due to the damage.
